Three Minnesota candidates learn about needs of local jails

By Brian Tabick, KIMT3 News - ALBERT LEA, Min.- Three Republican candidates went to an unlikely spot on Thursday, the county jail. But it wasn’t for any wrong doing, they just wanted to learn about the needs many Minnesota jails are facing.

Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Jeff Johnson, Candidate Jim Hagedorn and Secretary of State Candidate Doug Wordlow all toured the Freeborn County Jail Thursday. Sheriff Kurt Freitag said funding for mental health is one of the biggest issues the county faces right now.

”We have people going to our facility that have no business being there,” he said. That’s not the right place for them. The state is lacking in resources to use so it would be nice if we had additional funding.”

Sheriff Freitag also explained that drugs are the number one issue they face. He explained that the meth crisis is not going down and the opioid epidemic is already here. He said even if they doubled the staff they have for drug related crimes they would still have a full schedule.
