MANKATO — Acutely aware of the economic devastation that foreign livestock diseases, particularly African swine flu, could inflict on agriculture, a federal agriculture official told local producers that more safeguards and rapid response plans are being put in place.

“The goal is to keep out what’s not here, and if it is here, to eradicate it, or if we can’t, to contain it,” Greg Ibach, U.S. Department of Agriculture undersecretary for marketing and regulatory programs, told a group Saturday at the Minnesota Pork headquarters.

The visit was hosted by 1st District Congressman Jim Hagedorn, R-Blue Earth. He serves on the House Committees on Agriculture and Small Business. The discussion centered on swine flu but also touched on avian flu and foot-and-mouth

Three of the most dreaded words in the English language are “you’ve got cancer.”  Our Congressional representative, Jim Hagedorn, apparently heard those awful words a year ago.

There are certain things which should transcend politics. Battling a serious illness certainly falls into that category. While it sounds like Rep. Hagedorn is making great progress in this fight (and judging from the full schedule he keeps), I do hope that everyone, regardless of political persuasion or political affiliation will join together in praying for his complete recovery.

Letter: Feehan Needs To Be Asked About Background

The media’s utter failure to do their job in exposing the never-ending torrent of misrepresentations and lies from the Feehan for Congress campaign is getting tiresome.

Feehan routinely claims Congressman Jim Hagedorn has received tens of thousands of dollars of campaign contributions from pharmaceutical companies. Thus far, the closest Rep. Hagedorn’s campaign committee, Friends of Hagedorn, has come to a “pharmaceutical company” contribution is a grand total of $1,000 from Bayers’ agriculture division. Feehan is aware of this, but continues to peddle the lie. And the media’s coverage of the lie? Nada.

Feehan routinely calls Rep. Hagedorn a lobbyist. In reality, Jim Hagedorn has never worked as a lobbyist.
